What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) means universal life force energy.  Reiki is an ancient Japanese Healing Art used for stress relief and pain management that also promotes healing.  Healing can include the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of an individual.  Energy is all around us, such as when you get a shock or your hair is static.  Reiki was practiced in Japan and brought to the United States by Hawayo Takata in the late 1930’s and is beginning to gain popularity and name recognition.   If you have ever heard of Chi in the Chinese language you will know that Chi energy is used in Yoga and martial arts.  Often martial artists will use the Chi (energy) to break bricks with their hands and feet.  They are using their hands but harnessing the energy around them to break the bricks.  This is how Reiki works – harnessing the energy around us to balance the energy within each person to relax and heal the individual.   Reiki is often used in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, in animal therapy, and in conjunction with medical procedures such as chemo therapy, surgery and pain management for illnesses.

Reiki in the News:

What Dr Oz had to say about Reiki:

Reiki is one of my favorites, we’ve been using it for years in the Oz family, and we swear by it.”

Reiki is a popular energy healing therapy, which is typically performed by a trained Reiki master. Here the practitioner's light touch on, or slightly above, specific areas of the body is used to balance the flow of energy throughout the body. The laying on of hands on the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen and back delivers varying degrees of natural vibrational "heated" energy as needed, to strengthen the body to heal itself. Reiki can also be self-administered and is easy to learn.

One of the first to include a reiki practitioner in his department at The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York City was Dr. Mehmet Oz.  Dr. Oz is one of the leading cardiovascular surgeons in the United States. The New York Times Magazine reported that Dr. Oz is allowing the use of reiki during open heart surgeries and heart transplant operations. Says Dr. Oz: "Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals."
